Church History 1786-1973

The early stirrings of the East Brookfield Baptist Church were felt 225 years ago when traveling Baptist ministers preached here. During 40 years, until 1786 when it was decided by a group of 11 persons to establish and maintain a Baptist church in town, the flickering flame of interest was kept alive by this group and by visiting ministers and lay preachers. Ministers came from areas such as Woodstock, Connecticut and Sturbridge, Massachusetts, traveling over the poorest roads in all kinds of weather. Services were held in homes and barns.

The erection of a 32 x 40 ft meeting house in 1795, then at the Harrington St area, was a milestone in the life of the struggling church whose members were officially connected with the Woodstock Baptist Church and later with the Sturbridge Baptist Church.

Purpose

The purpose of this congregation is to give visible form to that faith and fellowship to which God has called His people. We acknowledge ourselves to be a local manifestation of the Worldwide Christian Church in and through which Jesus Christ continues to minister to the world by His Holy Spirit. We shall seek to fulfill this calling through adherence to the Bible...

Polity

Recognizing Jesus Christ as the only head of the church, this congregation shall seek to ascertain and to obey the will of our Lord in all matters of faith and practice. Authority to reach decisions for governing the affairs of this church being given to us by Christ, we hold that such authority and responsibility is vested in the active membership of the congregation...

Statement of Belief

1. We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
2. We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Missions We Support

Avant Brazil

… planting churches in Brazil since 1984. Training teams recruited from mature churches and guiding them as they plant a network of churches where none have existed. | Low-power FM Radio gospel training and broadcasting the gospel message throughout Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Panama, and Cuba

Community Connections

Food Pantry

The EBBC Food Pantry is proud to be a place for local people to receive nourishment- both in terms of providing food, as well as spiritual comfort and kind-hearted connection. It is a blessing to the volunteers who run it each week and to the people who come in. The Food Pantry is grateful to be a part of the community in this way, and to connect with other community groups who bring their food drive donations to us to distribute.

AA Meetings

Several AA groups use our buildings. Most are at the Harrington Center (267 E. Main Street- across from the church).
